Boris meets Dick

Newly restored half sheet. A gang of criminals, which includes a piano player and an imposing former convict known as 'Gruesome' (Boris Karloff), has found out about a scientist's secret formula for a gas that temporarily paralyzes anyone who breathes it. When Gruesome accidentally inhales some of the gas and passes out, the police think he is dead and take him to the morgue, where he later revives and escapes. This puzzling incident attracts the interest of Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd), and when the criminals later use the gas to rob a bank, Tracy realizes that he must devote his entire attention to stopping them.At one point in the film, the Comedy relief states: "If I didn't know better, I'd say we were dealing with Boris Karloff!".

Right up there with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN '48, is this fright filled comedy fun film. Wisecracking Bob Hope and lovely to look at Paulette Goddard, star in this film that had been tied up in a legal morass for quite some time. Finally available by Universal on DVD. My highest recommendation. Here is the really terrific one sheet, recently restored.

Charlie Chan. To some, that name conjures up an unfortunate Hollywood stereotype. Truth is, the actors that played the character in the 30's and 40's were not Chinese. No matter, all of the performers, had great respect for and I feel, portrayed the character with respect and class. Sidney Tolar was so happy to play the character, that when they had planned to cancel the C.C. series, Tolar bought the rights so he could make more movies! Here is the restored one sheet to one of the best of the Tolar Chans. Enjoy.

Mad about Mad Love

An insane surgeon's (Lorre of course) obsession with an actress (Gorgeous Frances Drake) leads him to replace her wounded pianist's husband's (Colin Clive) hands with the hands of a knife murderer which still have the urge to throw knives.

WOW! A terrific thriller, and the American Film Debut of Mr. Lorre. One of the last films that Colin Clive would make before his passing from acute alcoholism. Also one of the last films that Ted Healy would appear in (Great as an obnoxious Reporter) before being beaten to death while celebrating the birth of his son. Ted was a very bad drunk. The future was not bright for most of it's stars, but this film became a Horror Classic.

A Very Bad Decision

My pal Robert Shayne told me that when he was being groomed at Warner Brothers for bigger stardom, he decided to go independent. He then said quite seriously: "Actors rarely make good decisions for themselves after a taste of success". Bob started work on this little "Gem", and immediately knew he was in for quite an experience. First off, he made what he thought was a private comment to another actor concerning co-star John Carradine and how funny it was that here is Carradine practicing Shakespeare between takes, while acting in this grade Z picture. Mr. Carradine, heard this comment, and their working relationship was not the same from that point on. Bob also recounted being at the premiere of F.O.M., and a very sweet old woman walked up to him after the film, and said: "Mr. Shayne, I have seen all of your movies. After seeing this one, you should be ashamed of yourself"!. Here the restored one sheet.

Lesser Drac, Interesting Gimmick

Definitely the least popular of the Christopher Lee Dracula films, Dracula A.D. 1972 was an attempt to up-date the franchise by bringing it to modern day England. Dracula never ventured out of a defunct church, where black masses were done. Of course the film wasn't all bad. It had Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Caroline Munro was a delectable victim of the Count.

This advertisement promised you would be sworn in as a member of the Count Dracula Society. Kind of a reverse Church meeting.

Bud and Lou Meet their last Monster

They fly into Space, land back on Earth, right into Mardi Gra in New Orleans, think that the revelers are Aliens (Because of the wacky costumes and head wear) and quickly fly to Venus. A Reel Treat!

What a delightful surprise! I have not seen this film for over 25 years. I remember it screened on some L.A. channel. It was a faded color print full of the usual commercial breaks etc. Now, Warner Archive has released an almost pristine version. Bright, crisp color and clear sound. Charles Laughton is a Hoot and really camps it up. Most of the songs are o.k. except something about a pine tree, that makes you want to fast forward quickly. Tried and true routines and the forever lovely Hillary Brooke. Here is the restored one sheet for all to enjoy.

When it comes to cartoons, my viewing pleasure is usually satisfied by watching Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Or, anything by Tex Avery and the terrific Tom & Jerry library of MGM. Near the bottom of my happy times are the Disney toons. The Disney's are beautifully animated, but lack the comic carnage seen at the other studios. The Mickey Mouse cartoons that pre-date 1935 come closest. Here is a terrific poster to a Donald Duck, that is pretty good.

Here is a terrific lobby card from the 1944 Lon Chaney bandage opus. This was the last time that Lon donned the bandages. In his arms, the lovely Virginia Christine. Virginia later was known as the Folger's Coffee lady in numerous commercials! This lobby was in poor shape until the restoration process made it quite presentable for you!

The sequel to Horror of Dracula (1958) would not really come until 1965. In the meantime, one of Dracula's disciples would make his appearance in the guise of Baron Meinster. Played to great effect by David Peel. The Baron was so vile, he even made a Vampire of his own Mother! Fortunately for the movie viewers, Professor Van Helsing (The always wonderful Peter Cushing) would end the Baron's reign of terror. Another under-appreciated Karloff Great

When I saw this Karloff gem was coming out on DVD, I snatched it up quicker then Glenn Strange snatched up Lenore Albert in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN! The story: Dr. Laurence (Boris Karloff), a once-respectable scientist, begins to research the origin of the mind and the soul. The science community rejects him. He discovers how to transfer the essence of one brain into a different body! Great fun, and should have run longer then 66 min. This film was also known as DR. MANIAC and THE MAN WHO CHANGED HIS MIND. My highest recommendation. Here is the lovingly restored lobby card to this film.

There was no threat from D.C., but Terry thought a self imposed color change was in order to avoid a copyright battle. So, gone were the blues, and in with the yellows. Also gone was the name Super Mouse.

Hunting Fay Wray

The Most Dangerous Game (1932) is an interesting little film. A Wacky Bug Game Hunter (Leslie Banks), wants to keep his Island well stocked with Human Prey. It of course helps that he has created an artificial reef that easily maroons ships off his shore. Luck would have Robert (King Kong) Armstrong, Fay (King Kong) Wray and Joel McCrea arrive on the Island and become the hunted. Here is the restored Lobby Card to this great film which includes many of the same sets used to great advantage from King Kong.

Released in 1950, this is the feature version of Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars (1938). Very popular, these films made practically no sense thanks to sloppy editing. My highest recommendation to watch the three Buster Crabbe serials however.

Monster Lovers Dream Movie

To be a 12 year old in 1969. I opened the newspaper and saw an ad for a film that was showing at the local Del Mar Drive In. (The Drive In is now apartments and Restaurants.) My heart raced when I saw the latest Godzilla movie not only had the Big G, but all of the Toho Cannon of Monsters! D.A.M was another in a long line of American International dubbed releases to hit town. You had not only superb dubbing, but could hear Barney Millers own Hal Linden is the voice of the film's hero! Un-fortunately, the original American International dub is NOT on dvd. That version is highly sought after by Godzilla fans. Here is the restored half sheet. Notice that there doesn't seem to be a representative illustration of Godzilla anywhere on the poster!

Growing up as a kid in the late 60s, Seeing this film today is like visiting with old friends. Lon Chaney (Best known as the Wolfman) chews up the scenery as an annoying character out for himself in his quest for Uranium. Famed voice expert, Paul Frees provides several different voices both human and for several creatures including the creepy growls of our main titled character. Good special effects for it's time and for modern times as well. A lot of fun crammed into 66 min. The transfer is near flawless and has great theatrical contrast. Recommended.

Johnny Sheffield who played Boy in the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan series has died. As a young adult, he also starred in 12 films as Bomba the Jungle Boy. He fell off a ladder at his home in Chula Vista (Not far from me). He was 79.

Known in the UK as simply Dracula, here it was released by Universal under the title HORROR OF DRACULA. 6 Sequels followed, but none approached the quality of the first. the Hammer studios would entertain the world for years to come. Karloff and a Review

Perennial favorite Boris Karloff stars as a scientist who has created a helmet then when placed on the head of a subject can transfer their brainwaves onto a graph. Kind of like a lie detector graph. He discovers that women have stronger waves of brain energy then men. He demonstrates this to a room full of fellow scientists and friends, by using his wife an an example. Her brain waves are indeed stronger and much to the amazement of his skeptical friends the graph on the wall jumps up and down! Later after his wife dies in a car accident, Boris returns to his lab and angrily throws switches and discovers that his wife's energy has returned to the lab! He now joins up with a spiritualist and a brutish Igor type to further his experiments and try and contact his beloved wife from beyond the grave. Holds up quite well today. The seance table surrounded by corpses, the swirling spirits appearing as a funnel of energy and King Karloff in all his maniacal glory. My only complaint is the short running time of only 65 min. The last 5 minutes look rushed but still the movie wraps up nicely. And here is the Great one sheet.

In the good ol days, Theaters made a BIG deal out of Halloween. They would do live stage shows, project questionably themed "Spook" movies and basically have a great time entertaining their audience. Here is one such poster to a Halloween Spectacular of long ago. Restored and presented here.
Oh, btw, So Young So Bad is a prison reform movie and The Cobra Strikes is a Murder Mystery. Weird choices for sure!

The Film that "Inspired" Alien

Take a dash of NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST '58 Where an Astronaut returns to Earth with Alien fetuses in his body. Mix in a Little of THE THING '51 where an Alien Vegetable needs human blood to feed his "Children". Top it off with IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE '58 where a really pissed off Alien boards a Spaceship before it's return trip to Earth. And starts killing the Astronauts one by one. Oh yeah, and is killed by having the air leave the ship, which changes the atmosphere on board and..... And you have the Inspiration for ALIEN '79!

Return of the Ape Man and John Carradine

Return of the APE MAN (1944) Produced by Monogram. While on an Arctic expedition, two scientists (Bela Lugosi & John Carradine) find the frozen body of a prehistoric Caveman. They bring him home to their laboratory. Once in the lab, the Caveman-sicle encased in Ice, is thawed out by Bela with a blow torch and a heat lamp!. Once reanimated, he is placed in a cage. The gruesome twosome decide that in order to fully utilize (and control) him, they must transplant a more developed brain into the caveman. WOW! How entertaining can a bad/good movie be?! Almost as good as this restored poster.
